A NECESSARY CONDITION FOR MARKET INTEGRATION TESTS: THE CASES OF THE U.S. BROILER INDUSTRY AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; Djunaidi, Harjanto.
Most studies on price relationships in spatial markets assume that perfect information is a public good. However, during the last two decades, the food industry in the U.S. has experienced a dramatic structural change, as have the structures of commodity markets; this is especially the case in the broiler industry. Tests for the presence of market integration are conducted within the framework of Neo-classical theory of the firm. Grower costs and transportation in five southern U.S. broiler states (AL, AR, GA, MS, NC) are considered in deriving necessary conditions before any conclusion on market integration is reached. Using both parametric and nonparametric tests, this study found that all price pairs have a long-run price relationship and markets are...

Do We Prepare Our Students Well for the Job Markets? AgEcon
Redd, Tim; Djunaidi, Harjanto.
Concerns are raised by students and parents whether Agriculture Economics or Agribusiness courses taught at the College of Agriculture help the students to find appropriate jobs after graduation. From the educators' or administrators' point of view, the students' ability to meet job requirements is crucial because it reflects how well they have been prepared for a successful job hunting.

Does Institutional Loyalty Hypothesis Really Work?: The Case of MTSU Student and Employee Preferences toward MTSU-Produced Milk AgEcon
Djunaidi, Harjanto; Johnston, Tony V.; Redd, Tim.
Proponents of the institutional loyalty hypothesis suggest that students and/or employees of educational institutions are motivated to buy and willing to pay premium prices for products that carry the institution's name. This hypothesis is rejected based on ANOVA, Post Hoc, and cross tabulation tests.

Econometric and Time Series Model Selections: A Choice between Two Possible Approaches to Assess Linkages between the U.S. and Chicken Export Markets AgEcon
Djunaidi, Harjanto.
Econometric and time series model are utilized to study price linkages between the U.S. and export markets. VAR model showed that export price is affected by its past and leg-quarters prices. Econometric analysis showed a negative relationship between export price and broiler production which confirmed a large country effect.

Factor that Affect Arkansas Farm Operators’ and Landowners’ Decision to Participate in Agritourism AgEcon
Rainey, Daniel V.; Djunaidi, Harjanto; McCullough, Stacey W.; Das, Biswa R..
This study utilizes survey data analyzed at the regional level to obtain additional insights which may be left unnoticed if the analysis only considers data at the state level. The current analysis reveals that farm operators’ and/or landowners’ decision to participate in the agritourism industry in Arkansas is affected by state government infrastructure. But these infrastructures are varied among regions. The infrastructures are state government support in training the farm operators; in promotion and marketing as well as certainty and transparency in laws and regulations. State government’s sponsored trainings in agritourism along with marketing and promotion are viewed as the most important factors in all studied regions that affect operators’...

Is The U.S. Losing Its Competitiveness in the Global Chicken Markets: A Spatial Equilibrium Analysis AgEcon
Djunaidi, Harjanto.
Though the last forty years of data showed that the U.S. chicken export growth was still positive, but it has slowed in more recent years. Other countries such as Brazil, the U.S. main competitor in the global chicken trade was able to expand its market shares in recent years. Simulation results showed that the United States will play important roles in future global chicken trade providing that the U.S. firms are willing to accommodate the non-tariff trade barriers imposed by major importing countries.

SPATIAL PRICING EFFICIENCY: THE CASE OF U.S. LONG GRAIN RICE AgEcon
Djunaidi, Harjanto; Young, Kenneth B.; Wailes, Eric J.; Hoffman, Linwood A.; Childs, Nathan W..
The spatial rice price relationships for U.S. long grain rough rice are affected by many factors besides the transportation cost between markets, such as milling, processing, cooking and nutritional value as well as physical characteristics. This study applies a time series framework to analyze long run price relationships for Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and California long grain rice. Johansen's test results showed that at least there are two cointegrating price vectors. However, such a finding is not supported by the ECM model in any of the price series.

Surveys: What Does One Need to Know More About Them AgEcon
Djunaidi, Harjanto.
The use of surveys as a data collection method gained its popularity in recent years. However, one needs to be aware of the possibility to make measurement errors due to incorrect surveys design. The way how a question is asked and the choice the respondents have to choose from shape the sample space which in turns will affect the expected value, variance and co-variance of a random variable.

The Economic Impacts of Avian Influenza on World Poultry Trade and the U.S. Poultry Industry: A Spatial Equilibrium Analysis AgEcon
Djunaidi, Harjanto; Djunaidi, Andrew C.M..
Simulation results showed that simultaneous outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in Asia, the United States, Brazil, and selected European countries will have significant impacts on world poultry trade. Assuming demand for chicken meat is constant, the global export price is simulated to increase by 9.63%. HPAI outbreaks in the United States, Economic Union, and Brazil will have a greater impact on export price than in any other possible three-region case. Outbreaks in the United States and Brazil would still lead to major impacts on world poultry trade, confirming large country effects.

Which Broiler Part is the Best Part? AgEcon
Goodwin, Harold L., Jr.; McKenzie, Andrew M.; Djunaidi, Harjanto.
Predominance of production and marketing contracts in the broiler industry suggests a traditional analysis of price relationships might no longer be appropriate. In this study, markets for broiler cuts are defined as spatial. Results of a vector autoregressive regression analysis of monthly USDA data from 1987 to 2000 verify the price relationship between white meat and whole broiler prices. Price shocks in the boneless skinless breast market have a greater effect than dark meat shocks, suggesting this market is most important in price transmission. These results will assist industry participants to form more effective marketing and pricing strategies, thus adding efficiency to the market.
